Suzette's artistic sense was
first awakened as scholar at Paarl Girls High School. In the picturesque
Paarl Valley, she drew her first artistic lines under the watchful eyes of
the famed artist, David Botha.
When she met with Mechtilde
Schler, she found an unique opportunity in which she could realize her dream
as an artist. After having being involved and having received intensive
training for twelve years with the M.E. Schler art school, she developed
into an artist of her own rights. Then, from 1991, she started giving art
classes to children in co-operation with the department of Environment and
culture. She also used her home to train adults and children in the fine
arts. By occasion she was asked to act as judge for the arts at the Cape
Agricultural Show. The Strand Library approached her in 1997 for a
watercolour and mixed medium demonstration. During 1998 she attended a
watercolor workshop presented by international artist, Ron Ranson. During
1999 Suzette and Emelia Cillie-Gilson, along with their students, received
recognition from the ATKV for their work which was on exhibition at Rust en
Vrede, Durbanville.
Because of her close association with the
ME Schler Art School, she frequently exhibited her works with art for All
venues such as Brackenfell Library, Gordons Bay Mall, the former Nico Malan
Art Theatre and "Bienne Donné" . Quite a few of her works found their way
into overseas homes. She acted as the chairperson for the "Art for All"
Society.
She founded the Raithby Youth Art Club,
presented with the co-operation of Cultural Service, Western Cape in 2000.
